The Miami Herald and El Nuevo Herald Recognized 30 High School Students in Miami-Dade and Broward for their

Academic Achievements, Commitment to Service and Talents

PINECREST, FL. – May 23, 2016 – Gulliver is proud to announce that two of its seniors were honored by the Miami Herald and El Nuevo Herald Silver Knight Awards in a ceremony held last week at the James L. Knight Center in Miami. Having excelled academically and in service to the community, Andrew Boas ‘16 was named winner of the World Languages category and Namilla Sanchez ‘16 received an honorable mention in the Athletics category.

“Winning the Silver Knight in World Languages validates the importance of language study and has also personally shown me that hard work always pays off,” said Boas. “Now more than ever, I feel encouraged to pursue a career in the field of diplomacy as I aim to improve the world through the study of culture and language.”

Boas took home a $2,000 prize, a medallion and a Silver Knight statue sponsored by American Airlines and the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation. In recent years, he has made it his mission to learn as many languages as possible. He speaks English, Spanish, Italian, French, Catalan, Portuguese, Ladino, Mandarin Chinese, Hebrew, Dutch, Japanese, Latin, Attic Greek and Florentine dialect. He has been ambassador to the World Languages Department since his sophomore year.

In 2013, he became the first high school intern at Società Dante Alighieri – Miami/Puerto Rico. He is president of the Chinese, Italian and Spanish honor societies and is in the Math Honor Society. At Model United Nations, he received “Best Mandarin Chinese Speaker Award” at Columbia University and “Outstanding Delegate Award” at Stanford University. He received the AP Scholar with Distinction Award and the University of Virginia Book Award for Excellence in World Languages. “We feel honored to have two of our students recognized by one of the nation’s most important student awards programs,” said Gulliver Head of Schools, Frank Steel. “They each embody our schools’ dedication to educational excellence and our mission to fulfill our students’ potential.”
